This weekend I painted a large mural in Chinatown!I love painting large and it is always an honor to be asked by a wonderful organization to paint at their space and represent their community visually. This week I was asked to paint a piece in Oakland Chinatown at Lincoln Square. An amazing community center the has droves of smiling people enjoying the giant ship like playgrounds, the expansive b-ball courts, and sword fighting in the lawn bowling court, to name a few. The ages ranges from 1 to 100+ and all the folks were super stoked to see this painting in process. My good friend Christopher Mackessy, ( who took most of the photos for the deviantART Gear Shop,) is also a painter, As well as a teacher. He procured the walls through the community center with the blessings and we spent the last 2 days painting. Many of his students came out and we fitted them with brushes and oversized tee shirts and they went to town with our instruction. With the help of these smiling pint sized 8 year old Picassos we crushed it with a mixture
A touching note, and my advice on moving forward.AmirBeniz said the following:
I am a High school senior at the moment, and I'm choosing colleges to further develop my inspiration for art.
Right now I'm in a rut to decide which school to go to and how I am to pay for it.
I've been drawing everyday since I was a child but my art hasn't gotten to the professional level, ya know like yours.
What do you think I should do?
Re: Did you go to school for this?
I greatly appreciate note and I can say that I know exactly how you are feeling about the next steps from high school into art land. On your page it says "I am an upcoming artist whom generally started out drawing marvel superhero stick figure comics and grew up wanting to become part of Marvel's team of comic artists." I can honestly say now
Rocking Pieces in dAmuro! As a successful artist you have to be resilient and be able to adapt to new media. dA muro is a great archway between traditional mark-making and digital responsiveness. You pick up a new medium, it takes a bit to be able to speak your own style through the new marks. Not unlike a watercolor paintbrush or a chalk pastel for the first time, it takes some getting used to for sure. It is pretty straight forward and with practice it is as awesome as any other medium you are stoked on.
Here are some other pieces I have made with dA muro.
The importance of having artistic community. The importance of having artistic community.
It is awesome to be part of such the thriving DIY artistic community on deviantART.com . There are many a websites that showcases the portfolios of artists but only a few that really foster an arena for prolific dialog about the arts. The community is vast in levels of talent and amazingly rich with support and critique. Rather that just showcasing the best of the best, it is truly a venue or artist who show up with the best of PRACTICE. Over 22 million members globally use the site in every medium and theme I can think of. I have seen the world through a lot of lenses, most of with are jaded by intentions that are non-artistic and super insular. It is refreshing for me to see super talented famous artists and rea
Sharpie Blaster Clothing Bombs!Making dress shirts into super cool dress shirts at Burning Man with my friend Adrian Ward.
Take the shirt, put a couch pillow in it, draw your favorite monster from your head while enjoying a cold one with your homies on the playa. Take pics, repeat. The Life!
Love that Smile! Love that Practice!
Calligraphic Cintiq PracticeThis is tome Practice for a sign for a company called Artofactory. Here are some samples of ways that the lettering could go. It has to ride the line between legible and beautiful. I love making up mutant scripts, with the Cintiq I get a clean line with plenty of variation. A good tool to use before breaking out the canvas and paint. Enjoy!
Mask study drawingsThe Practice of Practice
Give yourself permission to explore other styles and emulate the masters that you look up to. Challenge yourself you speaks their success' in your own voice and style. The more you observe masters and emulate success, the bigger artistic vocabulary you wil have to continue to make amazing pieces that resonate with beautiful design and energy.
I have been a fan of the greatly talented artist Missmonster for a long time. After spending some quality time studying her work the week previous, these piece were drawn from my head in one sitting over tea at the hot springs. Of course I had to scan and tweak a bit. Here is a set of masks inspired by Bali masks and monsters mixed with animals. It is really pleasing to visually mix multiple things into a new form. It is also fun to work with symmetry. I love it when an artist you admire sparks the creativity in you and you have to be the appr
Creating a family of logos for Fire Festivals. It is festival season and I have been hard at work developing a family of logos just for this time of year. Axis Mundi has been hard at work this year creating world class fire festivals.
From top: FLAME, PACIFIC FIRE, FIRE DRUMS, KINETIC FIRE
It is really fun to have created a series of illustrated logos that go together in such a cool totem fashion.
Flame Festival, Pacific Fire, Fire drums, Kinetic Fire,
Each piece has the corresponding name of the festival written in my own handwriting.
They are all unique yet similar in the series.
Trapping an image for Silkscreen printingI have been working with a team of artist to produce a line of graphic illustrations. This collection will be a line of clothing printed for Fatbol Clothing.
It is an honor to work with a great group of talented artists and as the art director of this project it is my job to make sure the art gets from their canvas' to the garment with out any hangups. of course there is many variables in the printing process from conscious sourcing, color schemes, delivery, release dates, company politics, marketing, quality....Etc. I will have to deal with all of these things but my main quest is to get good art from good artists onto good clothing for a market that wants to wear quality pieces of art.
My main goal in this is to share the simple operating procedure so all artists looking to do commercial reproductions of their graphic works can step up and make their art print ready. If you do not do it, then someo
UNDISCOVERED III + POINTS GIVEAWAYSome time ago I started making weekly features of the works that I've found in the undiscovered browse mode.... Then the things became a little bit complicated, I got a job as a roofer and had almost no free time which also meant no time for photos nor dA.
Now I'm trying as much as possible to keep having fun with my camera and be active here again since all of you are so wonderful. I will also try to continue making those features and highlight all of those great and underappreciated artists. In every feature I will try to make some points giveaway too, just to encourage you to be more supportive. Remember that it's not about the points but about appreciating the art and being as much human as possible. And what is more human than helping each other? So, take a look at these works, comment on them, fave them and help their artists grow! Fave this journal to spread the love and scroll sloooowly down to get to know more about this issue's giveaway

Is dA and its Group system slowing dying out?Hello everyone!
Before you read, please keep in mind that my intentions are not to blame, insult, criticize, or say anything harmful about anyone! The intentions of this feature if anything, is to motivate us all in improving the group system and dA as a whole! ALSO this is focused more largely on photography, digital art, and a few other mediums, but I don't claim to speak for the cases of other mediums and types of groups that I am not familiar with.
EDIT: To make things clear, I don't believe dA or Groups will ever be "dead" in the sense of them not existing anymore, or members in both factions not existing either, I'm using "Death" more metaphorically perhaps, in saying that the way the group system is intended to be working, has been failing, and needs improving in order to not fail its purpose, and that dA needs to do something to strengthen the community sense and interactions between members both in groups and in the dA com
ProjectPorkchop Vol290#ProjectPorkchop is all about bringing more exposure to the many talented yet under appreciated artists going unseen on deviantART daily. The artists chosen truly deserve more attention based on low counts of favorites, comments, and watchers, added to their incredible artistic talent.

DJ Spinna album illustrations
This was a great series of character based illustrations I executed for New York's DJ Spinna, and Female Fun Records. Each piece was a different mix that had to have a specific visual theme. From Hip-House, Reggae-Dub, Brazilian, and a tribute to Quincy. The character of Spinna remained in the same posture but changed in specific outfits. The challenge was to make him look at home in each scene, cruising through with boxes of records. Using my own hand writing as the font and rendering in ball point over acrylic to keep that grimy rough look, is exactly what he wanted.
